There was a time when I never paid much attention to the birds outside…
Of course, they were always there. I’d hear them in the mornings or catch glimpses of them flying across the yard, but I never really stopped long enough to watch them.
That changed when I hung a simple bird feeder outside the large oak tree near our home!
At the time, I wasn’t trying to create a bird sanctuary or start a new hobby. I simply thought it would be nice to see a few birds stop by now and then. What I didn’t expect was how much joy that one small feeder would bring into my everyday life.
Over time, one feeder became two. Then came some hummingbird feeders, a small fountain, and eventually a tiny bench for the squirrels. Little by little, our yard transformed into a place where wildlife gathered, and somewhere along the way, bird watching became one of my favorite ways to slow down and enjoy the simple things!
If you’re interested in creating your own bird-friendly backyard, these are some of the essentials that have made the biggest difference for me.
Welcome the Birds
Everything really started with a simple bird feeder!
There is something surprisingly exciting about filling a feeder and waiting to see who shows up. Some mornings it’s the same familiar visitors, while other days a new bird appears and completely steals the show.
What I love most is that bird watching doesn’t require much effort. The birds do all the work. All you have to do is provide a safe place for them to visit and take a few moments to enjoy watching them!
If you’re just getting started, a simple feeder is more than enough. Find a spot where you can easily see it from a window or porch, fill it with quality seed, and give it a little time.
You might be surprised how quickly your yard becomes a favorite stop for local birds!

More Than Just Bird Seed
One thing I learned fairly quickly is that not all birdseed is the same.
Different birds prefer different foods, and offering quality seed can attract a wider variety of visitors. Over time, I’ve found that certain blends seem to disappear much faster than others, which is usually a pretty good sign.
Refilling the feeders has become part of my routine now. It’s one of those small tasks that only takes a few minutes but somehow makes the entire yard feel more alive.
There is something satisfying about knowing that when the birds arrive each morning, they’ll find a reliable source of food waiting for them.

The Addition That Changed Everything
While the bird feeders get most of the attention, I think the water fountain might actually be the real star of the backyard!
Every morning, one of the first things I do is make sure it has fresh water. Throughout the day, birds stop by for a quick drink, while others splash around as if they’re enjoying their own tiny spa day.
It’s amazing how much activity a simple water source can create!
Sometimes I’ll be sitting at the breakfast nook with my coffee and suddenly notice several birds gathered around the fountain at once. They drink, bathe, chirp to one another, and then disappear back into the trees!
Those moments never seem to get old. If you’re creating a bird-friendly backyard, don’t overlook fresh water. It may become one of the busiest and most enjoyable spots in your yard.

The Tiny Visitors I Didn’t Expect to Love
I know squirrels can be a little controversial when it comes to bird feeders.
Some people spend their time trying to keep squirrels away. Me? I eventually gave them their own place to hang out.
One of my favorite additions has been a small squirrel bench tucked beneath the oak tree. Now and then, I’ll place a dry corn on the cob on the bench and wait. It never takes long.
Before I know it, a squirrel is happily sitting there enjoying breakfast while the birds gather overhead. They’ve become just as much a part of the morning routine as the birds themselves!
Watching their silly personalities and endless energy always makes me smile!

The Hummingbirds Are Worth It
If you’ve never had a hummingbird feeder before, I highly recommend adding one. There is something magical about seeing a hummingbird hover in place before darting away in the blink of an eye.
They move so quickly that sometimes you only catch a glimpse of them. Other times, they’ll linger long enough for you to admire their beautiful colors and tiny size.
Even after all this time, seeing a hummingbird visit still feels special. Keeping the feeder clean and filled with fresh nectar helps encourage regular visits throughout the season.

Creating a Cozy Place to Watch
The bird feeders and fountains are wonderful, but one of the most important parts of this experience is having a comfortable place to sit and enjoy them. For me, that’s my breakfast nook!
The windows face the large oak tree where most of the activity happens. From my seat, I can watch the birds gather at the feeders, the squirrels visit their little bench, and the hummingbirds dart between flowers and feeders.
Most weekends, you’ll find me there with a warm cup of coffee and a journal nearby. The world outside is already awake, even if the rest of the neighborhood is still sleeping.
There is something incredibly peaceful about witnessing those first quiet hours of the day.

Why Bird Watching Became One of My Favorite Slow Living Habits
Bird watching wasn’t something I planned to fall in love with. It started with a simple feeder and grew into a morning ritual that now brings me peace, joy, and a reason to slow down.
In a world that constantly encourages us to hurry, bird watching asks us to do the opposite. It invites us to sit still. To pay attention. To notice the beauty that’s been there all along.
Some of my favorite moments happen while sitting at the breakfast nook, watching the birds and squirrels begin their day while the world is still barely waking up.
Those quiet moments remind me that joy doesn’t always come from big accomplishments or exciting adventures. Sometimes it comes from a bird landing on a feeder—a squirrel enjoying a piece of corn. Or a peaceful morning spent appreciating the life happening just outside your window.

Reflection Journal Prompts
Before you go, take a moment to reflect:
- What is one simple thing in nature that brings you joy?
- When was the last time you sat quietly and simply observed the world around you?
- What would help you create a slower, more peaceful morning routine?
- How can you make more room for simple joys in your everyday life?
Sometimes the smallest moments become the most meaningful ones!
